What to Expect During Your First Visit

Initial Patient Forms

Once you enter our office, you will be greeted at the front desk by our friendly staff. They will provide you with the forms needed to be filled out before your consultation can begin. These forms will provide us with information regarding your current condition and any past medical history. It is of the utmost importance that you fill these forms out completely to give your doctors all the necessary information regarding your case.

Consultation and Examination

You will next have a chance to speak with a doctor. The doctor will ask you a variety of questions to further understand your condition. You will be able to ask questions and voice any concerns that you may have. With your permission, we will then proceed to the examination process. A complete exam is performed to evaluate your condition and your health. A range of orthopedic and neurological tests will be performed, as well as a full chiropractic exam. Postural and range of motion evaluations will also be performed. All of these exams together help your doctor pinpoint the cause of your condition.

Once the history and examination is complete, the doctor will decide what X-rays may be needed. X-rays give the doctor an actual picture of your spine so that the most appropriate care is given. X-rays can also help the doctor see a wide array of other conditions that you might have not known existed. It is very important to us that only the minimum amount of exposure is used to help keep you safe. We limit X-ray exposure by only taking views of the spine that are needed, utilizing protective shielding and filtering the X-ray beam.

Review of Findings/ What to Expect

After the X-rays are developed, the doctor will look at them and discuss with you what the findings are and how they relate to your condition. They will also show you specific areas of your spine that may be problematic. During this time of your visit, the doctor will be able to tell you what can be done to help you and what to expect over the weeks to follow. If there is a condition that requires care from a different provider, then the appropriate referral will be made.

The chiropractic adjustment is the treatment portion of the visit. The adjustment consists of a gentle, quick thrust applied to a vertebra in a specific direction. The doctor will explain everything that will be done so that you are comfortable. Each adjustment builds on each other to realign the vertebrae or restore proper motion of the spine and reduce subluxations.

In the beginning stages of your care, it may be necessary to be adjusted multiple times in the first few weeks. This approach will help to manage any pain and begin the process of healing the spine. After approximately four weeks of care, your doctor will re-evaluate your condition to see what improvements have been made and make any necessary changes to your care plan. Once your body begins to show that it is improving, therapeutic exercises will be given to you by your doctor. These exercises are specific to you and your condition and will help your body to strengthen and stabilize itself. During this stage of care, your body’s soft tissues will further heal and become stronger. It will also be necessary to be adjusted once or twice a week during this phase to continue on the path to wellness. Because every person and every condition is different, each course of treatment will differ for each patient. Some conditions require longer periods of care than others. Your doctor will discuss what will be the most appropriate for your care.
